From the President
Dear Temple
Family,
Hope you are getting a chance
to enjoy summer. I think we all agree that there are really only two seasons
in the Chicago area-winter and
construction!
Over the last couple of
months, our Temple had several
event/field trips. Thank you to Holly Price for bringing a most thoughtful
documentary to us for the Yom Hashoah service.
Everyone who saw this film about a righteous gentile was very
moved. A few days after Yom Hashoah, it was so
exciting to be a part of 12,000 people at McCormick
Place, all walking for Israel
at Israel Solidarity Day. About 50 members of our congregation attended. Later in the month, Adult Ed arranged a
most interesting trip to Spertus
Museum. And we got there at the
right time-one of the exhibits we saw is now closed.
The month of May ended with
the Congregational Annual Meeting. Thank you to all the committees who are
working so hard to bring the best opportunities to our members. I keep saying, it's quality over quantity at our congregation. The
nominating committee, chaired by Esther Pollock, did a great job in adding
new members to the Board. Stepping
down are Julie Wright and Barb Anderson, whom we hope will come back at
another time. Joining the board are Steve Peskind and David Davis, returnees
to the board and Bernie Nussbaum, a brand-new board
member.
Congratulations to our 2008
Volunteer of the Year, Gary Raymond. Gary
has so many roles at the temple: Religious
School teacher, Board of Ed
Chair, By-Laws Chair and 1st Vice-President. In addition, he is a member of
several committees. On Shabbat, you can pretty much count on Gary in
attendance on Friday night and Saturday morning-even pinch hitting to lead
services when Rabbi Mann is not in town. When we were looking at bids for
major work on the building or the parsonage, Gary
stepped up to find the right contractors.
When he saw the need for adult Hebrew classes, Gary
coordinated Sunday morning classes at 7:30 AM. Temple B’nai
Israel is so lucky to
have a hard-working member like Gary Raymond.
By this time you should have
heard about our new Shabbat morning ‘Renewal Service’. This service came to
be as a result of the Strategic Planning committee last summer. Although our Temple
mission says that our congregation endeavors to serve the needs of the whole
gamut of Judaism, we were lacking in a service for those who wanted more
English, discussion and more reflection. This service has now met monthly,
with a core group of interested participants. Led by Dr. Ron Ramer and Bruce
Goldsmith, this service has now become a fixture in our services. We are very
excited that the Religious Committee has recommended that this service should
be included in our High Holidays. This will be especially interesting to
those who have missed our ‘Supplementary Service’ of years ago. Watch for
further details in ensuing Scribes.
As we begin planning for the
High Holidays, please remember the tickets are issued to all members in good
standing that have paid at least two-thirds of their 2008 dues by August 1st.
There are no other costs for tickets at our Temple.
You will also want to know that Sisterhood is planning a family Erev Rosh Hashanah dinner for Monday, Sept. 29th. Hope many of you will join us (and of
course, we will need help in cooking on Sunday and Monday). In addition, over
the summer you will receive a letter asking for your participation in our
community New Year card and in the Yizkor booklet,
where you will be able to list your departed loved ones. Please do not
overlook these letters.
Speaking of Sisterhood, an
exciting year is being planned. I hope that all women who are members of the Temple
join Sisterhood. It is a great place
to socialize with your Jewish friends, learn about Jewish happenings and
support our Temple. Anita Cohen
is doing a great job as our Special Gifts Chair. Anita makes sure that every
Bar/Bat Mitzvah receives a good gift from the community. Please participate.
Maybe you don’t know the kids or their parents-but we are all family and a
special gift is a way of supporting our Temple
family. Judith Russell and Amy Brozak have planned
a really fun opening meeting in September. Plan to come! And our next Rummage
Sale will be in September. Save your gently used items-they can be worth
money for us.
Our annual Temple
picnic is Sunday, August 17th. Thank
you to David Leader for stepping up to co-chair the picnic with Amy Brozak. There will
be good food, fun, and games for the kids and camaraderie for all. When we
moved inside for last year’s rained-out picnic, everyone had a great time.
Thus, this year, we will again have the majority of activities indoors.
Hopefully, August 17th will be a nice day and some of the festivities can be
outside. This is a much anticipated event for all ages-it also an open house
for prospective members. Save the
date. And, volunteer to help out-two people cannot run the picnic alone.

Mazel
Tov to all those who had graduations or special
things happening in their families.
Congratulations to Spencer Gordon and Adina Mann who graduated
(formerly known as Confirmed) from our School, and Jeremy Feinberg and Alex
Katz who recently celebrated their Bar Mitzvahs. I love writing about nice
things that happen to Temple
members-and I will, if you let me know what/who is happening. Today I am
modestly writing about yours truly. Through my work at Mutual Ground, I got
to know several members of Junior League of Kane and DuPage.
Each year at their annual meeting, they select one person in the community to
be honored. This year, I was very humbled to be awarded Humanitarian of the
Year by Junior League of Kane and DuPage.
____________________________
Each Shabbat we all say a ‘mishabeyrach’ for those of our Temple
family who are not well. Please know you are always in our thoughts, and of
course our prayers.
____________________________
A big thank you to everyone who is helping
to make our Temple the wonderful
congregation it is. See you at Services and then at the Picnic!

HIGH HOLIDAY TICKET POLICY
This year, Rosh
Hashanah falls on September 30th and October 1st and Yom Kippur on October 9th. The Temple By-laws state that
a minimum of two-thirds of a member's dues and Building Maintenance Fund
commitment (for the calendar year) must be current by August 31st of the calendar year in order for a Temple member to be issued
their High Holiday tickets. It would be appreciated if we could ALL do our
part and fulfill our Temple obligations in a
timely manner.
As in years past,
Carol Large will be handling the guest tickets. Tickets will be
printed and mailed in September. Any member wishing to purchase a guest
ticket for visiting out of town friends and family members may do so for
$25.00 per ticket. The $25.00 fee will be waived if your guests can
prove that they belong to another synagogue. Grown children of members
(no matter where they reside) and members' parents (that do not reside in
the West Suburban area) will receive complimentary guest tickets.
Please send your check for $25.00 per ticket, payable to Temple B'nai Israel, or your request
for the complimentary tickets, to Carol Large.
Upon receipt of your
check, the ticket(s) will be sent to your attention. Please be sure your
name and address are clearly noted. A self-addressed stamped envelope
with your check would be greatly appreciated.
In addition,
non-members of our Temple may purchase High
Holiday tickets at $300.00 for one ticket and $500.00 per family. Should
the person wish to join the Temple, the fee will be
applied toward their membership dues.
Newcomers to our
community have always been welcome at our High Holiday services, but they
must contact Carol to obtain tickets. Please call the Temple at 630-892-2450 for
more information.
